Protecting Yourself from the Sun in the Summer

The sun and summer go hand in hand and we know you can’t wait to set up your favorite chair near a nice, cool body of water and soak up some rays. Not so fast! The sun may certainly be fun, yet you have to ensure you’re protecting yourself and your loved ones from the harmful rays emitted by it each and every hour. Yes, a nice tan is what you’re searching for, yet when you sunbathe with the intention of cooking yourself to achieve the perfect “golden bronze” look, you may end up causing more harm than good. For this reason, it’s vital to choose a high SPF (35+ typically) to protect your skin from seeing too much of those glorious, cosmic rays casting upon your favorite swimming spot. You’ll thank us later when you’re NOT equivalent to a lobster from all of the time spent in the sun.

Staying Hydrated with Plenty of Water

Our bodies are comprised of nearly 65% water and when we’re dehydrated, the aforementioned number may drop to dangerously low levels. You may believe if you’re in the water, you’re not losing nearly as much water from your inner system, yet you’re actually wrong. Swimming for hours at a time, even just for thirty minutes, requires a vast amount of body movement and exercise. You’re still sweating and burning a lot of calories when you’re partially submerged underwater. For this reason, and many more, it’s extremely important to stay adequately hydrated when you’re having fun in the sun.

Protecting Your Eyes with Proper Eyewear

Your eyes require proper shielding from the harmful sun rays as well. This is especially true if you happen to be boating, swimming, or near a body of water. The sun’s rays reflect strongly off of the water you’re either near or submerged in and can cause damage over time if you don’t protect your eyes with a quality pair of UV-resistant sunglasses. You can pick up a decent pair of sunglasses for as little as $30 in most stores and be set for the next few summers. Your eyes are the gateway to enjoying life, let’s protect them at all costs to ensure you’re able to see and enjoy all of the amazing summers in the coming years.

Eating the Right Foods for Health in the Summer

The foods you consume during the summer months will certainly dictate how you’re feeling when you choose to go swimming, go on a hike, or simply take it easy around the house. The foods we recommend you eat are of course healthy ones consisting of quality, organic vegetables, fruits, nuts, grains, and meats. Eating whole, real foods will allow you to feel great, look great, and be on top of your game. Feeling energized after a meal is a fantastic way to jumpstart your day. Some of our favorite summertime meals consist of the following:

  • Breakfast: Acai bowls
  • Lunch: Avocado toast with Smoked Salmon (or other favorite fish)
  • Dinner: High-quality, homemade, natural burgers with plenty of vegetable toppings
  • Snacks: Nuts & grains with high omega-3 contents
  • Reducing Alcohol Consumption for Health & Safety

Alcohol consumption, especially in excess, is common during the summer months. Having a good time is fine and all, yet you don’t want to overdo it. Most men and women shouldn’t exceed three drinks during a party as this will inevitably lead to drunkenness, hangovers, and potentially deadly consequences. During the summer months, there are so many more additional factors at play where things can go wrong. Add alcohol to the mix and you may very well find yourself in some nasty situations. Injuries, hangovers, even deaths in certain situations can all be prevented with either controlling your alcohol consumption and/or eliminating it entirely.

Enjoying the Outdoors During the Right Time of Day

The hottest times of day during the summer are typically from 11:00am – 3:00pm. This timeframe is when the sun is at its peak brightness and intensity. If you have the luxury of being able to choose your activity timeframe, avoid these times to protect yourself from sunburns, heatstroke, and dehydration. If you can’t avoid these timeframes, be sure to wear protective clothing, apply sunscreen regularly, and stay hydrated.

Exercising Regularly On Land or in the Water

The summer months are made for the outdoors. Be sure to utilize the long days to go outside and play! Whether you’re favorite sport is golf, volleyball, or cycling; you’ll most likely find a great deal of activities to enjoy with friends and family most days throughout the summer. Exercising outdoors is not only great for your physical health, it’s amazing for your mental health as well. Have you ever gone out for a nice, long bike ride during a sunset and felt truly refreshed, renewed, calm, and relaxed? Yes, us too! It’s no coincidence. Being outside, amongst nature, and with the company of close friends and family can do wonders for your mental health. So get out there and live life to the fullest this summer!

Stretching Regularly Prior to Engaging in Activities

You thought we were finished with our summer wellness guide? Not just yet! We’d like to recommend you stretch before and after your activities to reduce the chances of injuries occurring. A simple five minutes of stretching may very well prevent a dreaded knee injury, a twisted ankle, or a tweaked lower-back. All in all, stretching will help you be able to enjoy summer to the fullest extent.
